D. Michael Hamner AIA, Architect has been an adjunct faculty member since 1991. He became a full-time Assistant Professor in 2006. Prior to his teaching at ELAC, Michael taught Design Studios at Woodbury University. Michael has worked for numerous architectural firms in California and Hawaii. He is a licensed Architect in California, Hawaii and Louisiana. For the past 19 years he has been a principal, along with his architect wife, of a Design/Build firm in the Los Angeles area, BArch, Builder/Architects, which is a licensed architecture and construction company in both California and Hawaii.
The firms work ranges from custom residential, commercial, and municipal to institutional. The bulk of their projects now include golf course clubhouses located across the U.S. The firm also executes personal land development. In addition to his practice and teaching, Michael served as Commissioner for the City of Monterey Park as a Design review Board member (8 years) and Planning Commissioner (11 years) where he was Chairman for 7 years. He currently is an active commissioner with the Building & Safety Department.
Michael has two other passions, basketball and BMW’s. In addition to being an AAU coach for many years, he has been a Varsity Basketball coach for 8 years at Schurr High School in Montebello. As for the BMW’s, 2 M3’s and a current 2008 M5 satisfy his craving for speed and engineering. Michael has 2 grown children, Lindee 26 and Mychal 23. He and his wife Krys have a younger son, Kainoa 10.
