Beyond the Assignment takes a long overdue look at the way architectural photographers use visual story telling, technical precision, and a unique visual sensibility to document the built environment. In so doing these photographers move "beyond the assignment" and help immortalize ourmost significant architecture and design.- Julius Shulman Institute

Be sure to see this exhibition at WUHO Gallery in Hollywood Between October 5 and November 1.

The annual KRob Architectural Delineation Competition is coming back for its 39th year. The competition was established in 1974 by the AIA Dallas Chapter and named after architect Ken Roberts who was recognized for his talent in ink perspective drawing. As the world's oldest architectural drawing competition currently in operation, KRob recognizes original works that best represent the artistic qualities of the medium in both hand-drawn and digital formats.
Students and professionals are all invited to submit their best architectural illustrations like elevations, sections and perspectives, and can be conceptual or final renderings. Submissions must be authored by one individual and multiple entries are allowed. However, submissions awarded in past KRob competitions are not eligible. All entries can be submitted online or physically by mail.
Jurors will include Alex Hogrefe (founder of alexhogrefe.com), sci-fi and fantasy artist Stephan Martiniere, and Perry Kulper (architect and associate professor at University of Michigan).
Submissions are due Oct. 28, 2013 at 5 pm CST (physical entries must be postmarked by that date). Winners in different categories from both student and professional entries will be announced at the awards presentation and reception on Nov. 14 – and here on Bustler shortly after.
Scroll down to learn more and see winners from previous KRob competitions in recent years. You can also check out this article by Julien Meyrat, one of the KRob competition organizers at the AIA Dallas, for an insightful read on architectural drawing.

32 new students are enrolled in Environmental Design 101 this 2013 Fall semester. They are from 12 different countries and speak 10 different native languages. From a kindergarten teacher to a student who works graveyard shift at UPS. From a fresh out of high school graduate to a University of California student. From an international student from China to another from El Salvador. From one who drives daily from Santa Monica to another who rides the Metro from Long Beach. They are all here interacting and learning at Elac Architecture Department. During the next 13 weeks they will share an impressive amount of experiences on this journey that will undoubtedly be remembered for the rest of their lives.

Over the years I have been recording student works from various universities around us to which you are most likely to transfer. I will be posting them here. Please check them out and write your comments. This one is from 2011.

Since last year, every semester at USC School of Architecture ends with a public spectacle called BLUE TAPE. These two day marathon review sessions bring together nearly half of the architecture faculty from all five accredited architecture schools of Los Angeles and  from other states.

In architectural career conversations the issue of "what else architectural students can do with their education?" often comes up. At Archinect, we have been pondering that question for years and developed these series called "Working Out of the Box" for all to get inspired and always think and understand what one can do with their education in architecture.. Enjoy the possibilities which are endless.

One day tour of the bleeding glass-and-concrete edge of Mexico City Modernism

It is almost a requirement for visiting architects to visit at least one work by the master of Mexican Modernism Luis Barragan, and the most accessible (and cheapest) is the Chapel and Convent of the Capuchinas Sacramentarias in Tlalplan.

With all the great architecture schools within our periphery it is almost impossible to not take advantage of what they offer for the public and the area students of architecture and urban design. Here is one of those offerings: SCI Arc 2013 Fall Lecture Series. Plus, you know, attending means extra credit for your design studio.

SWA’s Summer Student Program challenges students to reconfigure established systems of infrastructure and landscape, adapting regional developments within a preexisting cultural environment. In its fifth year, the program has dealt mostly with California’s diverse terrain, and now turns its focus to the bedraggled yet beloved Los Angeles River. Seven students from universities worldwide join SWA for four weeks of on-site practice, followed by five weeks of internship in an SWA studio.

Hello ELAC!

My first week as a full time teacher was a flurry of activity, things I had to check, forms to be filled and new faces to meet in administration and faculty groups. Above all for me, it was connecting with the students and starting a new school year in Elac Architecture Department.
I am excited to be here and I have many reasons for that.
I believe architecture must reach to people and there are no places in higher education can do this better than community colleges. We are our community, we build our community and we are needed as architects by our community.
I am glad to be part of this environment and my goal is to be an active member taking a part in that process.
As we start this new blog, I would like to invite all of you students and the faculty to contribute as much as possible.

Let's do it!
