D. Michael Hamner FAIA, Architect has been an adjunct faculty member since 1991. He became a full-time Assistant Professor in 2006. Prior to his teaching at ELAC, Michael taught Design Studios at Woodbury University. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently rewarded Michael and the Architecture program at ELAC with elevation to the College of Fellows. This is the first for a two-year College Professor or Community College Program. Elevation is recognized by “notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture”. The National level of the AIA has recognized ELAC’s incredible success.
Michael has worked for numerous architectural firms in California and Hawaii. He is a licensed Architect in California, Hawaii and Louisiana. For the past 27 years he has been a principal, along with his architect wife, of BArch, Builder/Architects, a Design/Build firm in Los Angeles. The firm is a licensed architecture and construction company in both California and Hawaii.
The firm's work ranges from institutional (University), commercial, and municipal to custom residential. Primary work includes University Housing and Athletic Facilities to Golf Course Facilities (Clubhouses) located across the U.S. The firm also executes personal land development. In addition to his practice and teaching, Michael served as Commissioner for the City of Monterey Park as a Design review Board member (8 years) and Planning Commissioner (16 years) where he was Chairman for 10 years. He currently is an active commissioner with the City of Monterey Park Oversight Board, appointed by the California Community College Chancellor.
Michael’s other passions are his family, basketball, and BMW’s. In addition to his partner and wife, Michael has 2 grown children, Lindee 33 and Mychal 30. He and his wife Krys have a son, Kainoa 17. Michael was an AAU Basketball coach for many years, and was also basketball coach at Schurr High School in Montebello for 8 years, including 6 years with the Varsity. His teams went to the CIF Playoffs 5 of the 6 years and won League 3 years in a row. After his stint with High School coaching he coached a Pro-Am team for a number of years. As for the BMW’s, his former stable of 2 M3’s and an M5 have given way to a current M6, which satisfy his craving for speed and engineering. However, it has not ended there, Michael just acquired a 2017 Alpina B7 to further his addiction for speed, innovation and luxury.
Michael’s philosophy can be simply stated: “Training future architects that truly reflect the diversity of our society, offering underserved students a route to our profession inspired by his own grass-roots-based career.”
