Project: “Surviving Disasters: A Home in a Bag”
Synopsis
Earthquakes rumbled, tsunamis swelled, hurricanes and tornadoes sheared through the globe in recent years as evidenced in Haiti, New Zealand, Japan, and right now the United States.
In these times of disaster the world comes together to lend a helping hand: food, clothing, medicine, emergency supplies and tents arrive rapidly. Immediate needs after an earthquake, a flood, a hurricane or other disasters focus on survival.
The next phase of recovery requires a secure shelter to provide safety for families and a place to keep their food and valuables locked as they begin to recover and prepare for the final phase of rebuilding their homes and community.
Your project consists in designing such place and creating a shelter that acts like a home – even if transitional. Its building process should engage the recipients, thus giving them a sense of ownership that has proven psychologically beneficial to people who have very often “lost everything”.
The “Home in a Bag” package should include basic flat-packed furnishings such as beds, tables, storage cabinets, shelves... that can be easily put together using the tools provided with the house package.
